France

For its sheer diversity and quality, France is surely the richest wine nation on earth. Historically, the country was made up of many different cultures which developed their own unique wine traditions. From simple French country Chardonnays and Merlots, right through to fine Bordeaux and Champagnes, there really is a French wine for every taste and pocket. Getting to know them can be a hugely rewarding experience.

France, perhaps more than any other country, has a grand tradition of winemaking that has been handed down from father to son for generations. And yet, in the Universities of Bordeaux and Montpellier, France also has two of the world's most important wine research institutions. Tradition is a result of centuries spent refining and perfecting all aspects of the art and science of wine.

The national system of Appellations Controlées enshrines the French belief that wine is not just a drink, but an expression of place or terroir. It is not just Chardonnay from Chablis you're drinking, it is Chablis.

For the modern drinker, perhaps more used to buying wine by grape variety — Cabernet, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, etc. — this can seem a bit confusing, but with a little background knowledge, things become much clearer.

History of Laithwaites Wine

It all began back in 1969, after student summers working in Bordeaux vineyards, and lugging wine home on the train. I and five winegrowers then bought a Ford van with the idea of me bringing their "real" wines directly to customers in the UK.
